Going blonde — what you really need to know

By Catherine  ·  February 2026

Blonde is the highest-maintenance colour you can ask for — and also one of the most rewarding when it's done properly. Here's what the journey actually looks like.

Why blonde takes time

To reach the lightest, brightest blondes — ice cream tones, Scandinavian blondes, or near-white — takes time, patience and expertise from both the client and the colourist. The darker your natural colour, the more stages the hair needs to go through, and the longer the journey.

Lightening works by taking hair through the warm colour spectrum: red, orange, yellow, pale yellow, then white. The aim in most cases is to reach a pale yellow — similar to the inside of a banana rather than the skin — which gives toners the best base to work from. From there, toners can neutralise any remaining warmth or add a specific tone: cool ash, pearl, warm beige, or even pastels and vivid shades.

Why toners fade

Toners are semi-permanent, which means they begin fading with the first wash. How long they last depends on several factors: the condition of your hair (damaged hair holds colour less well), how often you wash it, and what products you use at home. This is why we always recommend Olaplex with any bleach service — it rebuilds the bonds broken by bleach during processing, giving your colour the best possible foundation to last.

We advise blonde clients to book a toner top-up and blowdry roughly halfway between their main colour appointments. It's a quick appointment that makes a significant difference to how fresh the colour looks — and it gives your stylist a chance to check on the condition of your hair.

What to use at home

The right products make a genuine difference. A colour-safe or bond-strengthening shampoo and conditioner will extend your colour far longer than anything from a supermarket shelf. Purple shampoo used once or twice a week can help neutralise any warmth that creeps back between visits — but don't overdo it, as too much will dull the colour. Ask your stylist what they'd recommend for your specific tone.

Not achievable in one appointment? That's not a failure — it's honest colouring. Trying to do too much in one session risks the condition of your hair. A staged approach, done properly over a few visits, will always give a better long-term result.

If you're thinking about going blonde for the first time, or want to take your colour lighter, book a consultation first. We'll assess your hair, talk through what's realistic and what to expect, and put a plan together. The journey is worth it.
