What is balayage?
Balayage started out as a painting technique — the word itself is French for "sweeping" — but it has evolved into a look as much as a method. It creates a soft, natural blend from a darker root into lighter colour through the mid-lengths and ends. Some clients prefer a more dimensional result with ribbons of lighter and darker pieces; others go for a full ombré effect where colour floods evenly through the lengths.
The key appeal is low maintenance. Traditional highlights and full tints create a strong colour at the root that shows regrowth within four to six weeks. A well-executed balayage, by contrast, can go six months before needing a full refresh — though we recommend a maintenance visit at around ten weeks to lift the grown-down colour back toward the root and refresh the face frame.
Is it a difficult technique?
Yes — and it's worth understanding why, because not all balayage is created equal. Painting bleach onto hair without separating out the sections requires real skill to achieve soft, seamless blends rather than blotchy patches. It takes practice, a trained eye and a light touch.
For lighter natural hair or a sun-kissed result, open freehand balayage works well. For darker hair or a stronger colour transformation, the painted sections need to be wrapped in foil, paper or film to intensify the lift — which takes a little longer but gives a much more dramatic result.
What about price?
In the interest of transparency: balayage at Hair Gallery is always a multi-service appointment. Because it is a bleaching service, we include Olaplex Steps 1 and 2 in our balayage price — we consider this non-negotiable for protecting the hair during the process. A toner is also included to finish the colour professionally, and will be factored into your quote at consultation.
Expect to be in the chair for a minimum of four hours, potentially longer for very long or thick hair. This is something we'll confirm at your consultation, along with the full price.
Always ask about extras when comparing salon prices. A balayage quote that doesn't include Olaplex or toner will look cheaper upfront — but you'll pay for both separately, and the result won't be as good.
If you're thinking of moving from highlights or full tint to balayage, or want to try the look for the first time, give us a call or drop us an email to arrange a consultation. We'll talk through your hair, your goals and exactly what's achievable.
